On Writing a Bilingual Story

A couple of you have asked what language I write Angels Power in. Of course I love this question so I’ll answer it in greater details.
My first language is French. I grew up in Belgium and lived there in the French-speaking half of it. I lived in Waterloo for a while. Yes, Napoléon’s last battlefield. I’m a big fan of the site and went to watch every yearly reenactment until the 2015 fiasco, which was hilariously disastrous.
I’ve been building the universe of Angels Power since my teenage years and many aspects of it were built in French.
I moved to the US after I turned 18. It's been ten years. I still speak and write in French daily.
The story of Evadrion, the rebel Angel, started to germinate around 2013. She is a rather new character therefore the script is written entirely in English.
Some of the world deliberately retained its original French flavor: Crestenoire, Tumpestre, La Noire and some of the characters names are inspired directly from Celtic mythology, notably Eithne and her nickname of the Graïnne.
New words appeared in English that had to be translated back to French however. It's the case of the Matterforged Swords.
The mysterious swords in the story are excessively potent, able to destroy a mountain with a simple air swing.
Both Angels and Diabolics are able to use them and the item alone confers extra powers to Angels who carry them.
Their origins? Unknown.
The swords seem to have their own inherent life and power. They are ancient and it’s important what they are made of (though their true nature is A MASSIVE SPOILER THAT I WONT MAKE.
I couldn’t just place it as is in the French translation. I wanted to create it’s own made-up French word for it… And based on the nature of these swords I came up with : Hylozoforme, an invented word based on Hylozoïsm, the philosophy of attributing to matter a primitive and inherent life.
Anyway, I hope this answers the question in an interesting way.

Vous étiez plusieurs à me demander dans quelle langue j’écris Angels Power. Assurément, j’adore la question alors j’y réponds ici plus en détails.
Ma langue maternelle est le Français. J’ai grandi en Belgique dans la partie francophone, en Wallonie. J’ai habité à Waterloo. La dernière bataille de Napo, tout ça. Je suis fan du site qui est resté pratiquement intacte et à l’époque je me rendais aux reconstructions chaque année où on retrouvait des acteurs venus de toute l’Europe. J’étais même rentrée voir le Bicentenaire de 2015 qui avait été un mémorable fiasco. Vous en avez peut-être entendu parler. J'ai trouvé ça très très drôle...
L’univers d’AP je l’ai commencé quand j’étais ado et beaucoup des aspects sont en Français : des noms de place, de personnages, des termes inventés…
Puis j’ai déménagé aux Etats-Unis à 18 ans et transitionné à l’Anglais comme ma langue secondaire. Ça fait dix ans maintenant, mais j’ai continué à parler et écrire le Français au quotidien.
Il m'arrive de faire du Franglais mais à part cela, je n'ai rien oublié.
L’univers d’AP a donc maturé dans les deux langues. L’histoire d’Evadrion, l’Ange rebel, a germé en 2013, c’était donc en Anglais. C’est un personnage assez récent comparé à Métatron ou Azazel qui habitent cet univers depuis bien plus longtemps (Métatron a son accent, d’ailleurs).
À ce moment, certains lieux ont dû être traduits mais d’autres ont conservé leur nom d’origine en Français : Crestenoire, Tumpestre, La Noire et d’autres sont identiques dans la version Anglaise.
Certains noms sont inspirés de la mythologie Celte et notamment le personnage de Eithne et son surnom "Graïnne":
À l'inverse, certains termes originaux inventés en Anglais ont dû trouver leur équivalent francophone.
C’est le cas des épées mystérieuses de Métatron, les Matterforged Swords, pour lesquelles j'ai trouvé un équivalent inventé: les Hylozoformes. Un mot inspiré de hylozoïsme, un système philosophique attribuant à la matière une vive propre.
